With 20 engraved plates, including a frontispiece, by various artists. Contemporary full tree calf for Sherborne School by BICKERS & SON, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, and gilt crest and medallion to boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. School prize plate to front pastedown dated 1932. A nice clean copy, with a strong tobacco scent. Light rubbing to binding, with some sunning to spine and lower board. Very good. A classic collection of poetry, ghost stories and legends that are mostly parodies or deliberately humorous. First printed in the Bentley's Miscellany and New Monthly magazines, and first published in book-form between 1840 and 1847. Item #57572
