New York, NY: J. Abeel Williamson, 1836. [Christianity in China] INSCRIBED SECOND EDITION. Octavo (19 x 12cm), pp. 378 . INSCRIBED by the author in black ink to second blank: 'Robert Diggles, Esq. | with the author's most | affectionate regards, | New York | Oct. 11th 1837.' Re-bound in twentieth century purple leather-grained cloth with gilt titles to spine. Edges trimmed. A large water stain from the beginning up to about p.40. Occasional marginal pencil notes, and more extensive pencil notes to rear endpapers. Black ink ownership to title page. A paper fault to p.195/96, slightly affecting text. Edges and margins heavily toned, with light spotting throughout. Light wear to cloth; spine heavily sunned. Very good. First published in 1834 while Abeel was still travelling in Europe, this is the story of his first short mission to China, between 1829 and 1833. This edition would have been the first edition published during his residency back in New York, and the most likely to have been inscribed to friends, as this copy. Item #57509
