The Mysterious Island (part III): The Secret of the Island.

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1880. [Science Fiction Adventure] VINTAGE COPY, a later edition. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.189 [35]. With a selection of eight engraved plates by Ferat, including a frontispiece. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. All edges gilt; yellow-coated endpapers. Repairs to split hinges. Some creasing and minor tears to fly-leaf. Lightly toned throughout. Shaken, with several proud gatherings. Rubbing and toning to spine; corners bumped. Very good. The third of three parts, in which a group of Yankee prisoners of war escape by balloon from the siege of Richmond during the American Civil War (perhaps recalling the use of balloons during the siege of Paris in 1871), and end up on a remote Pacific island which, after a series of unlikely adventures, turns out to be Captain Nemo's secret lair (of Twenty-Thousand Leagues' fame). First published in 1875 and translated into English the same year. Item #57459
