With an engraved frontispiece, and a selection of Riou's other illustrations in-text. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. All edges gilt. School prize plate to front pastedown, date 1899. Repairs to split hinges. Light toning and spotting throughout. Cloth quite heavily sunned and rubbed; head pulled and frayed. Good. The author's first full-length novel, originally published in an English translation in 1869. A fantasy adventure charting the travels of a balloon over the 'dark continent,' and a satire on English books of African exploration. Item #57455
