London: Vizetelly & Co., 1885. [French Literature] FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.464 . Advertisements at rear dated May 1885. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine and upper. Brown patterned endpapers. Old repairs to split upper hinge. Red ink note to fly-leaf correctly states 'Les Rougon-Macquart Vol. XIII.' A similar black ink note to half-title. Toned to edges; a little cocked. Moderate wear to cloth, with bumped corners and fraying to head and tail of spine. Very good. Zola's violent and powerful tale of working life exposed the inhuman working conditions of mines in northern France in the 1860s. By Zola's death in 1902 it had come to symbolise the call for freedom from oppression so forcefully that the crowd which gathered at his State funeral chanted "Germinal! Germinal!" Item #57436
