London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, no date [circa 1900]. [Science Fiction Adventure] EARLY EDITION IN ENGLISH. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp. 143 . With 30 engraved plates by Roux, including a frontispiece. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. Yellow-coated endpapers. School prize plate to front pastedown, and a blue ink ownership to fly-leaf. Light occasional thumbing and marking; some weakness to centre of text-block. Spine toned, with light rubbing to cloth. Very good. A scarce title, first published in English in 1890 in approximately the same format, and lavishly illustrated by M. Roux. The novel portrays the adventures of The Baltimore Gun Club as they purchase the Arctic, and seek to change the Earth's climate zones by shifting its orbit. The privately-owned North Pole thus becomes a tropical paradise, allowing the Club to clean up on the cruise ship and piña colada holidays market. A splendid book, wonderfully presented. Item #57131
