Heavily illustrated with engravings by Leighton, and other artists, including a frontispiece. Fine contemporary red full morocco by RIVIERE, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, gilt decoration to boards, all edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Joseph Alexander Walton to front pastedown. Spotting and toning to blanks; a clean copy otherwise. Rubbing and bumping to spine and board edges, with some careful re-colouring. Very good. A collection of moral aphorisms, mainly translated from the Dutch of Jacob Cats, with a few contributions from the contemporary Scottish moralist Farlie, and others.
