London: Bickers and Son, 1893. [Military Biography] FINELY BOUND, a new edition. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.viii; 387 . With occasional in-text illustrations, and a frontispiece portrait of Wellington. Contemporary green polished calf, with gilt titles to a red label, and further gilt decoration to spine. All edges and endpapers marbled. Spotting to endpapers and preliminaries. Rubbing to spine, and a few marks and bumps to boards. Spine heavily toned to brown, with a few touches of re-colouring. Very good. An Anglican vicar from Connaught, Maxwell built his reputation as writer of military history and fiction on the later-disproved claim that he had taken part in the battle of Waterloo. This biography was originally published in three volumes between 1839 and 1841, frequently reprinted, and here appears in an abridged format, designed to emulate Southey's 'Life of Nelson' (1813). It also includes a new chapter concluding the Life of Wellington, who actually outlived his biographer by two years. Item #56819
