London: Secker and Warburg, 1939. [Futurology] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 15cm), pp.vi; 330. Publisher's grey cloth with titles in gilt and red to spine. Top edge red. With the blue illustrated dust-jacket, priced at 7/6. Lightly browned and rubbed to edges. A little rubbing and toning to board edges. Jacket heavily worn, with large chips and closed tears to edges, paper reinforcement to rear. Very good. Wells' frank, and on some levels prescient, assessment of Human civilisation on the brink of world war. Although his fear of war was indeed realised sooner than even he might have imagined, the dark repressive post-war world he predicts, redolent of Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' (1949), appears overly pessimistic with the benefit of hindsight.
