The Woodlanders. Thomas HARDY.

The Woodlanders.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1887. [Classic Literature] FIRST COLONIAL EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[4] 352. In a contemporary amateur binding of tan half half with gilt titles to burgundy labels on spine. Grained green cloth over boards. Plain bookplate of Captain Liebert to front pastedown; further black ink ownership to flyleaf. Spotting and browning and to endpapers. An early gathering a little loose. Rubbing to binding, especially spine and corners; spine head pulled. A rare survival. Good. The popular and suitably tragic tale of country folk at Dorset's Little and Great Hintock, which Hardy claimed to have liked best of all among his stories. Filled with omens and malevolent landscapes, and peopled by a moody woodsman, a dashing but misogynist doctor, and an unfortunate woman caught between their limitations. Item #54265
