The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. J. R. R. TOLKIEN.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.

London: George Allen and Unwin, for the Folio Society, 1976. [Children's Classic] FIRST DELUXE EDITION. Octavo (23 x 15cm), pp.286; [2]. With 20 plates in colour after illustrations by Tolkien, some with colour by H.E. Riddett. Publisher's tan quarter morocco with gilt titles and a gilt design by Jeff Clements, repeated to mottled tan cloth over boards. Tolkien's maps to endpapers. Top edge brown. With the tan paper-covered slipcase. A few very minor scuffs to spine. Slipcase a little scuffed and bumped, with a little splitting to one end. Fine in a slightly worn slipcase. Although the binding is uniform with the edition of 'The Lord of the Rings' also published by the Folio Society in 1977,illustrations by Fraser were not introduced until the 1979 edition. Seldom has any book been so widely read and loved as this classic tale. Its hero, Bilbo Baggins, has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals: Alice, Pooh, Toad... Tolkien's Middle-Earth is a vast mine of treasures and knowledge, its roots delving deep into folklore, mythology and language. 'The Hobbit' is an ideal introduction to this richly imagined world, which was more fully and complexly realised in 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion'. Item #53625
