[Privately produced]. 1892- circa 1903. LATE VICTORIAN SCRAPBOOK. Small quarto (26 x 19cm), pp.[16]; 1-2; 9-68. With three leaves removed near the beginning, and two from the back. Containing a great panoply of decorative monograms, crests and printed signatures and addresses belonging to the English gentry, cut from letters or envelopes and pasted into the initial alphabetical section of the book. The paginated section consists largely of newspaper cuttings of amusing stories and anecdotes, and towards the back similar cuttings of popular poetry. Most but not all of the book is filled, and there is a good stock of unpasted material loose. Rear free endpaper has been cut away, but is still present, loose at rear with an article on nursing and a black doll face pasted to it. Brown cloth boards with 'Newspaper Cuttings' stamped in a calligraphic front to the front cover. Signed and dated August 24th 1892 by Mary Bates to the front free endpaper. The only other date found in the book, towards the back, is July 29th 1903. Only light wear externally, but the hinges internally are heavily split and very fragile. Some expected browning associated with glue and newsprint. Fair. Item #51119
