Publisher's red cloth blocked in black and gilt, neatly respined to style with Spencer Blackett's Standard Library to foot of spine, later black endpapers. With a frontispiece engraving by Charles Kerr, lacking the tissue guard. A first or second issue with the misprint of w shed on page 56, and lacking the 8 from 138 on the contents page common to both issues. Presented in a red morocco spined clamshell box. Ownership stamp of Arthur H. Walsingham, Architect and Surveyor, to recto of frontispiece, dated 1910, small ink mark to same. Textblock generally clean with just the occasional thumbmark and corner turned over. A few marks to cloth, lightly rubbed to extremities, neat repairs to corners. Rare. Very good. The outstanding second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes. Item #44240
