Original sketch by Hailstone for the last official portrait of W.S. Churchill to be painted and one that Churchill liked so much that, in addition to the artist signing, he has added his own distinctive signature. Mounted and beautifully framed (89 x 73cm). Bernard Hailstone's 1955 portrait is recognised to be the last officially commissioned portrait of Winston Churchill. In the previous year, the artist Graham Sutherland had completed the ugly portrait that both Sir Winston and Lady Churchill disliked so much the latter destroyed it. Hailstone's manner provoked no such distate. It is recorded that Lady Churchill liked the Hailstone image so much, by contrast, that she sent the artist a note to that effect. In this preliminary sketch Churchill is clearly keen to endorse the artist's work by signing it as his endorsement and approval. When the Cinque Ports commissioned a portrait of Churchill as their Lord Warden and Admiral, the Prime minister sat to Hailstone during 1955 at his house at Chartwell. The artist records that his sitter: 'was very affable and pleasant, but difficult to work on because he wouldn't sit still. He was dictating his History of the English Speaking Peoples while I was painting. He didn't want to waste any time. He was a jolly good painter. I was very impressed with his work.' One of the earliest products of these sittings must be this study of Sir Winston, head and shoulders, still wearing into retirement his characteristic 'siren suit', the utilitarian one-piece grament that he had invented in the war as a more practical solution than a normal suit to the problem of dressing in a hurry during an air raid. The image affords an insightful glimpse of one of the most remarkable and dynamic men of his century in his eighty-first year. The age of the sitter is not disguised, nor is the fact of his retirement, but the pugnaciouos set of the head and clear gaze recall at once Churchill's keen intelligence and indomitable character.

All uniformy bound in publisher's half burgundy morocco, gilt. The complete run of 100 volumes, from vol. I to C; although the Strand soldiered on for another few years in digest form, those smaller sized volumes were never bound up in the bi-annual editions. Exceptionally scarce complete. Includes the first publication of several major novels such as Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, Kipling's Puck of Pook's Hill, Churchil's My African Journey, Christie's The Labours of Hercules, Wells' First Men In the Moon, etc., all fully illustrated. Hoare, Lieutentant and later A.D.C. of the 21st Empress of India's Lancers, with whom Churchill charged at the battle of Omdurman whilst on the campaign detailed in this volume.Frontispiece portrait trimmed at margins for some reason, tissue guard wanting, although trces remain. A very respectable copy of an extremely rare book in any state.

Colonial Issue of Churchill's first book. Intended for sale in India and the Colonies. 8vo. Original publisher's olive green cloth decorated in black, titled in gilt to spine. Clean and sharp, slightly rippled to rear panel. A very handsome copy. Frontis. portrait of Major-General Blood, with tissue guard, two colour folding maps and four full page map plates. Internally clean, contemporary magazine images of Chakdara Bridge and the Malakand Pass stuck to the front and rear pastedowns. Ownership blind stamp to fly which has pinholed the flyleaf at one point. There is an ink ownership to the front fly which has been crossed out. The lower edge of the page bloke has suffered very marginal damp staining, the remnants of which can be seen on the lower margins of the maps (due to their being printed on slightly coated paper). Altogether a handsome copy, very good indeed. WSC's literary debut concerns the military action on the Northwest Frontier (an area now part of Pakistan), in 1897. Churchill participated in the campaign as a second lieutenant in the cavalry; he volunteered for the post, having become bored of playing polo in India.

Octavo, in half blue calf over buckram sides, titled and trimmed in gilt, original cloth upper preserved at rear. Frontispiece with a couple of old tape marks (mainly to rear), an old colonial label to title page now dried and fallen away (with some deposit), browning to paper as would be expected from an Indian climate. Still a presentable and serviceable copy of Churchill's scarce first published work WSC's literary debut concerns the military action on the Northwest Frontier (an area now part of Pakistan), in 1897. Churchill participated in the campaign as a second lieutenant in the cavalry; he volunteered for the post, having become bored of playing polo in India.

FIRST EDITION, EARLIEST STATE. 8vo., pps 466. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine in pale blue dustwrapper. This copy is a Colonial issue, sold by A.H.Spencer of Melbourne and with UK price clipped from jacket, Australian label applied to spine. A letter from Government House, Australia, confirms its status. Book is fine but for watermark to top edge- jacket is very good; a little spotted to upper, spine toned with snipped price as mentioned. The first edition comprised only 5000 copies. This example in the EARLIEST STATE dust jacket of pale blue, published June 1938; The 1940 remainder issue (original binding) is wrapped in a reset yellow jacket. The US version, entitled 'While England Slept' was not published until late September 1938.
